The Spell Collector adds a fantastical twist to terroristic
paranoia. With healthy doses of history
and philosophy, dashes of conspiracy theory, and a sprinkle of mysticism, this novel explores the brutal
dangers that can stem from a single thought.
When his book
about a Lost Element of infinite power ends up as the laughingstock of his
peers, Hector Tuttle, a professor of philosophy, loses his career, his wife,
everything but his beat-up Mustang. His
car dies in the middle of the desert, where he encounters Mona, a drifter of dubious sanity. She believes his philosophical theories, and believes that
she has in fact found the Lost Element. In her
van is a hoard of strangely vibrant objects that contain the Element; but, she
believes, only Hector can unleash their power.
Bizarre events draw the attention of the FBI, which targets Mona’s
collection as a weapon of mass destruction.
Yet, the essence of her collection is what’s been known throughout the
ages as “magic”: a phenomenon of beauty, an instrument of creativity and worship.
